NFTA Unveils Black History Month Bus Celebrating Black Culture

BUFFALO, N.Y. – The Niagara Frontier Transportation Authority (NFTA) has unveiled the winning artwork for its Black History Month Bus. Artist Jalen Law created a stunning piece entitled "The Future is Our Canvas," which honors the contributions, culture, and legacy of Black Americans.

The NFTA would also like to recognize the runner-up, Corrie Allen, for her submission titled "Iconic Beauty," along with two other local artists: James G. Pappas for his 1990 silk screen artwork "Inner Space Continuum" and William E. West Sr. for his watercolor depiction of City Hall. West's daughter worked in the Planning Department at the NFTA for several years.

NFTA leadership, local artists, and community members attended the event which featured musical performances by Vibrant Strings and catering provided by Brothers Restaurant.

This celebration reflects the NFTA’s commitment to honoring the past and highlighting the current accomplishments of Black Americans while fostering discussions about progress and unity via its African American Heritage Committee . Additionally, on February 4, one seat on every Metro Bus will be reserved in honor of Rosa Parks, recognizing her courageous decision to refuse to give up her seat to a white passenger, which served as a catalyst for the Montgomery bus boycott and the fight against racial segregation in the U.S. The NFTA is proud to work with the Niagara Falls National Heritage Area to continue recognizing local talent with this annual art contest. The Black History Month Bus will travel across the Niagara Frontier region as a moving work of art, delivering a message of acceptance and representation to the communities it serves.Sharon West in front of her father's painting Runner up Corrie Allen with NFTA CEO Kim Minkel, Director of Transit James Morrell,l and members of the African American Heritage Committee
