NFTA Unveils Black History Month Bus Celebrating Harriet Tubman

The Niagara Frontier Transportation Authority (NFTA) proudly unveiled the winning artwork for its annual Black History Month Bus Friday. The selected piece, Guided by Light, was created by artist Sharard Saddlers and honors the enduring legacy of Harriet Tubman and her courageous leadership in guiding enslaved people to freedom, including along routes through Western New York.

Saddlers, who was raised in Buffalo, reflected on the significance of the recognition. “This community helped shape who I am and instilled in me a deep sense of pride in my culture and Black history,” Saddlers said.  I am truly honored that my work was chosen.”

The unveiling event was attended by NFTA leadership, community members, and Harriet Tubman’s great-nephew. The celebration also featured live musical performances by Vibrant Strings and catering provided by Evelina’s Kitchen.

Observing Black History Month underscores the NFTA’s commitment to honoring the past, celebrating the present-day achievements of Black Americans, and encouraging meaningful dialogue around progress and unity through its African American Heritage Committee. The NFTA is proud to partner with the Niagara Falls National Heritage Area in continuing to recognize artistic talent through this annual contest.
